Emperor Mineelik II sends a message to Aba Jifar II, the Oromo king of Jima. He rebukes him for placing Janjeroans in bondage, and uses the peace betwixt and betwen Shewans and the Gwenderine as an example. This is notable to us postmoderns, because 1) many coffee-shop revolutionaries have tried to paint Mineelik as a Hitlerian bigoted despot and 2) Amhara as an indistinguishable blob. This document shows both to be false. 'tis no accident that he is remembered by his proud Ethiopians as imeeyé (mama)!
an historic document, interpreted from Old Amharic into American (English), that shows the magnanimity of mineelik to periphery peoples of his empire and how shewa and gwender have their own flavors
